Isle of Wight Nostalgia - Memories

From Suzanne May who describes a day trip around the Island

My name is Suzanne May. I am from Hamilton,Ontario, Canada. I just love the Isle of Wight. The first time I was there I was alone. It was in May of 2000. It was a rainy day, but I just had to see the island. It was my last day in the area. I took one of the Vectus buses all around the island. Most of the time sitting on the top all alone. Just relaxing and enjoying the scenery. I did manage a few pictures, but most of them are blurry because of the wet windows. I still wouldn't have missed it for anything. The second and I hope not the last time I was there was also in May, but of 2002.

The day was fantastic. I had my daughter and son-in-law with me. We went over on the hovercraft and once again got the day rover and took off. This time we stopped at the Amusement Park at Alum Bay / Needles. My son-in-law tried to climb the rope ladder and ring the bell. Couldn't do it. It looked so easy when the young man running the game did it. We played a few of the games and came up winners. My daughter and I each one adorable ladybug keychains. hehe!!! While we were there we were told that we could get a short boat tour out to see the "Needles". We didn't want to miss that. On that day, the chair lift was not in operation, so we ventured down the stairs. Beautiful going down, but a loooong way back up. I am so happy that we did it though, it was worth every step. Even if there hadn't been a boat ride it was worth it to see the sand. We were amazed at all the different colours. The boat ride was excellent. Calm and warm. The people were all friendly. We really enjoyed it.

When we got back up to the top we found a place that sold fancy bottles and shapes that you can fill with the wonderful coloured sand. We just had to have one. We each bought one. Mine is the shape of the Island. I keep it on my desk to remind me of a fantastic day. We made a stop at the glassworks. It is really something to see. It was getting late by this time and things were closing up for the evening.

We got on the bus and enjoyed the rest of the tour around the island. When we got back to the hovercraft, we were just in time to see the last one for the evening pull away. That was ok, we enjoyed the train ride to the end of the pier and the journey back across the water by catamaran. I hope in the future to come back. But next time I do I plan on spending a few days on the Island. There is still so much more I want to see. Well thank you for letting me share this with you. I hope that anyone who looks at this site and hasn't had the chance to visit the island, will do so soon. It is incredible.
