4 The oldest and most common of the outlandish monsters used as heraldic devices, the griffin - according to the ancient Greeks - guarded the gold of Scythia. In the beautiful village of Godshill, one of the most picturesque on the island, is this stone-built village inn which was once a coaching house. The parish church dates from Norman times, and has a rare mediaeval wall painting.
